Camera: Digital or Film?

Written by admin on April 9th, 2007 in Photography.

I can’t count how many times I’ve been asked about film cameras vs. digital. The truth is, I don’t really care which I’m using except that there are things to keep in mind with both. I’m going to write some digital tips that I’ve learned "the hard way" since I’ve started shooting digital.

I thought I would start out by talking briefly about the camera gear I have and use. My first camera was given to me by my father. It was a Bell & Howell Auto 35 Reflex. Sadly, I don’t have it anymore (might be at my parents house) but it was the same thing as the Canon EX Auto. Here’s a picture to it

After using that camera for a year or so I saved enough money to buy a Canon T70

I also started using (again, thanks to my father) a Canon A1

I love these two Canon FD mount cameras! I still use them and still love every minute of my time with them. Hey, they have depth of field scales on the lenses!!!!

I skipped the whole EOS film camera lines. I’ve used the EOS 3 and also used (and loved) a couple of EOS 1-series film cameras but I never felt like giving up my FD’s.

When it was time to make the move to digital, I stayed with Canon. What can I say, I’m loyal…

Really, the reason was that I see myself wanting a full frame digital camera and after I invest in a set of lenses, I want them to match my upgrade path. Since, right now, Canon is the only one that offers a full frame digital SLR in the Canon 1DS series, I went with Canon.

I started with the Digital Rebel

After a year of lovely images, I added the Canon 20D to my bag.

The 20D is a wonderful camera and now that I have worked a system out that maximizes what I want to create, I find it a very workable tool.

I still shoot my film cameras. Mostly black and white, infrared, or for slides but I’m slowly shifting over to all digital. I do miss my darkroom though… All of the images on my site were shot using either the 20D or the Digital Rebel. I have some film that I need to have processed from the T70 that I took on a hike a few weeks ago. I may scan that and get it on there too.
